Experimental Films

Incompatible is an experimental video art project that attempts to combine and interrelate my passions for film and music in one medium. Originally intending to create a narrative animation out of MIDI blocks inside a Digital Audio Workstation, I pushed the project in a more abstract direction when I realized how nearly impossible it is to create something that sounds aesthetically pleasing but also visually represents something. I decided to use this incompatibility between the two channels to my advantage. Now, the work consists of two separate MIDI streams, one that is image-based but an auditory nightmare and another that is actual musical MIDI information but with no clear visual pattern. I wanted to highlight the clash between the peace and joy we expect and promote around the Christmas season with the conflict and dysfunctionality that can often happen in a family. Thus, the visual story follows the path of an unknown person through a wreckage of household items at Christmastime as he seeks to find the cause of the conflict, while the audio channel is my own arrangement of a traditional carol in MIDI notation.
