Isaiah McCrina

Composer and Filmmaker

I have played piano for fifteen years and am on my way to completing a dual degree in Composition and Music Technologies/Digital Creative Media and Film. I have loved films and film music as long as I can remember, going back to the days when I would listen to the works of John Williams, Hans Zimmer, Harry Gregson-Williams, and others on a dual CD/Cassette Tape player as a kid. I compose instrumental music intended to accompany films and video games, typically writing small-ensemble jazz works, solo piano pieces, or orchestral works. I also have experience playing piano accompaniment for churches and choirs. I have done editing and post-production work for experimental films, company training videos and promotions, and virtual ensembles as well. I live in Lagrange, GA, about an hour south of Atlanta.

Out of the Gamut

The title of my site comes from a term heard both in music history and the world of visual design. The word “gamut” actually developed as a contraction of “gamma ut”, which was the lowest note in the medieval solmization system (what would eventually become the “Do, Re, Mi, we all know from The Sound of Music) originally developed by Guido of Arezzo in the 11th Century. “Gamut” then became the word for the medieval tone set, for which the Guidonian Hand was a teaching aid. Gamut also refers to the range of colors attainable by a printer or computer system, and “out of gamut” is a warning received when a color is unable to be transferred from one to the other. In general, though, the title simply refers to my taste for strange or unusual musical sounds, visuals, or ideas.
